Lecuona set for Portimao return after being declared fit
The Spaniard missed out on the first races of 2025 through injuries he sustained in Superpole but will be back on his CBR1000RR-R machine in Portugal
Iker Lecuona (Honda HRC) has been declared fit for the upcoming Pirelli Portuguese Round and will take part in the latest MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship round. The #7 missed out on the racing action at Phillip Island after suffering a fracture in his foot in a Tissot Superpole crash, and also skipped the test at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve a couple of weeks ago to focus on his recovery. After having his pre-round medical check on Thursday at Portimao, Lecuona was declared fit and will return to WorldSBK action.
Lecuona was injured when he crashed at Lukey Heights at the iconic Phillip Island, suffering from a fracture of his fourth metatarsal bone in his left foot. Although the Spaniard did not need surgery on the injury, he has spent the time since the Australian Round recovering and recuperating, opting to skip the test at Portimao in order to avoid any setbacks. With the extra recovery time, Lecuona went for his medical check at the Portuguese venue ahead of the round and was declared fit, meaning he can take part in the Portuguese Round alongside teammate Xavi Vierge.
Discussing his physical condition on Thursday at Portimao, Lecuona said: “I’m finally back! Tomorrow, I’ll be back on track after a very long time. I feel really good again, I even feel much better compared to Australia. When I arrived in Australia, I had the injuries to my ribs and shoulder, the old injuries still there on the foot. Overall, I feel 80% much better compared to Australia so that’s a really good point. I know I need to go step by step, take the confidence and speed again, but I’m very confident. I did some cycling and skiing at home, I trained like normal, but I didn’t have the time to ride on the bike. I had a few days where maybe I could, but with the weather conditions, it wasn’t possible. In training, I felt 100%, but let’s see what happens on the bike. I feel really good and like I have a strong shoulder, that’s important because it was one of the main problems in Australia, and I don’t have any pain in my foot.”
